Tale of the Great Pumpkin (Beer)

Like Linus waiting in a pumpkin patch, many people spend the last few weeks of summer counting the days until pumpkin-flavored anything start hitting the shelves and signal ‘fall is here.’ And beer is no exception.

Kind of like how most Americans are obsessed with bacon everything (except this pumpkin thing is only for a few months and not 24/7/365). Yes, there are even some bacon beers out there.

In all honesty though, is any other season so affiliated with a flavor (or vice versa)? Maybe peppermint-flavored things in winter but that really doesn’t seem to compare to what some are calling ‘Compulsive Fall Disorder.’

If you know someone suffering from this debilitating disorder, point them in the direction of Old Line so we can cure them with our assortment of pumpkin beer remedies.

In honor of this seemingly ludicrous love affair with all things pumpkin, below are a few local finds to fulfill that pumpkin itch and cure that case of CFD.
Patterson Pumpkin, Full Tilt Brewing – Baltimore.

Looking for a local beer that is both: a) pumpkin-flavored and b) packs a punch? Baltimore-based Full Tilt Brewing puts out the deceptively strong Patterson Pumpkin. At 9.0% ABV, one would not expect this brew to go down so smoothly.
Jacques Au Lantern, Evolution Craft Brewing Company – Salisbury, MD.
Another beer from the Old Line State, Evolution’s take on pumpkin ale is a well-balanced treat. This beer doesn’t disappoint.
Boxcarr Pumpkin Porter, Starr Hill Brewery – Crozet, VA.
Oh you only like dark, heavy beers and not this frilly pumpkin stuff? Starr Hill’s creation is a middle-of-the-road porter that’s easy on the palette. No excuses for you.
Ichabod Crandall, Devils Backbone Brewing Company – Roseland, VA.
At this time it might be a tough find, but if you’re not the biggest fan of pumpkin or other spiced beers give this a try. Some light spices turns into a pleasant pumpkin-flavored aftertaste that hangs on your tongue for a bit.
