Where’s My Fall Beer?
September has finally arrived and it’s time to enjoy everything fall has to offer.
Well, almost everything. “Seasonal creep” is officially hitting the craft beer industry and breweries shipped their fall creations earlier this year than they ever have before.
Let’s break down the simple algebra for you: Beers in store earlier = beers sold earlier.
It’s an interesting dilemma. The high demand for autumn beers (and winter beers, for that matter) strain craft breweries with limited space and force their hand to start brewing earlier. This allows them to get more batches out the door when demand is at its highest.
Another factor playing a role here: breweries want to be the first to market so the casual beer drinker tries their beer first before moving on to the next season’s beer(s). It’s become a sort of rat race to see who can get their seasonal beer on the shelf first.
Unfortunately, now that the time has (legitimately) come for us to enjoy these delicious beers the selection is limited due to the early run on the beer in August (yes, August!).
For instance, are you looking for Southern Tier’s Pumking? Sorry, the greatest pumpkin beer of them all (arguably, of course) is already long gone off the shelves.
But fear not, dear friend, as there are still plenty of delicious harvest beers, spiced beers, Oktoberfest beers and, yes, pumpkin beers.
A few solid options include Sierra Nevada’s Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale, Breckenridge’s Autumn Ale and Dominion’s Harvest Ale are all available to get your fall harvest beer fix. There are also numerous Oktoberfest beers (try Victory Festbier) and a plethora of pumpkin beers to choose from.
Looking for a solution to this madness? It’s easy.
Buy these seasonal beers when you really want them and not when they’re first on the shelves.
